Veteran political editor Chris Uhlmann has joined Sky News Australia as a political contributor.

Uhlmann – who has previously worked at the ABC and Channel 9 – will be a regular contributor on Sky’s programs including Credlin, hosted by Peta Credlin, every Tuesday night.

Uhlmann will also join Sky’s chief anchor Kieran Gilbert on NewsDay at 11am (AEST) on Wednesdays to discuss all the top political stories.

He will also be part of the channel’s special investigations and documentaries.

Uhlmann said he was “delighted” to be joining Sky News Australia and his appointment comes after he left Channel 9 in 2022 after five years at the network.

“I have watched the network since its inception and have always admired its commitment to journalism through straight-shooting broadcasters like Kieran Gilbert and Laura Jayes,” Uhlmann said.

“In 2010 I helped establish ABC News 24 and had a brutal reality check on just how hard it is trying to keep pace with Sky.

“Many have noted the network also encourages robust, opinionated debate.”

Uhlmann’s first appearance on Sky News Australia will be on Credlin’s program on 6pm AEST on Tuesday, April 16.

Prior to being at Nine, Uhlmann spent two decades at the ABC including as political editor for flagship programs including ABC News and 7.30.

Uhlmann also noted the diverse opinions that air on the station including during last year’s voice referendum by commentators including Credlin and Chris Kenny.

“Sky stands tall in the Australian media landscape” he said.

“You may not agree with it, but you can’t ignore it.”

Sky News Australia chief executive officer Paul Whittaker said Uhlmann is a “highly-regarded political journalist through his decades of experience, has covered some of the biggest stories that have shaped Australia’s political history”.

“We’re delighted Chris joins our unrivalled political team to provide our viewers with astute analysis and thought-provoking commentary, backed by sharp political instincts and an intricate understanding of the machinations of government,” he said.

Sky News Australia is owned by News Corp Australia, publisher of The Australian.
