Stav Davidson isn’t fazed about the three-way tussle for top spot on Brisbane FM radio, describing the system that measures radio audiences as archaic.

Davidson, who co-hosts breakfast show Stav, Abby & Matt weekdays on Hit105 with Abby Coleman and Matt Acton, says he doesn’t care about ratings, which has helped with his longevity on-air.

“If you go chasing them you’ll end up failing. If I don’t think I’m doing the best show regardless of what it’s rating, then I shouldn’t be doing the show,” Davidson told The Australian. “I just try to do the best show I can do, and hopefully that resonates with people. The way they take the ratings is very archaic and I don’t think it’s very accurate.”

Commercial Radio Australia said GfK radio ratings surveys used “multi-mode methodology”, combining doorknock recruitment for the paper diary (70 per cent) and online recruitment for the e-diary (30 per cent). The diaries collect radio listening information, and also include a lifestyle questionnaire.

“Data is weighted in order to adjust for variances between the achieved survey sample and the population profile of the market that is being surveyed,” a CRA spokeswoman said.

In the final GfK radio survey of 2019, Australian Radio Network’s 97.3 FM’s then breakfast team, Bianca Dye, Mike Van Acker and Bob Gallagher, ended the year as the top-rating FM radio breakfast show in Brisbane. The show increased listeners by 1.7 percentage points to 11.2 per cent. But this year the breakfast team consists of Gallagher, Robin Bailey and Terry Hansen.

Davidson and his on-air partners, who are also friends, slipped 0.1 point to 11 per cent, while Triple M’s Greg “Marto” Martin, Margaux Parker and Nick Cody rose 0.5 points to 11 per cent. The Hit and Triple M Networks are owned by Southern Cross Media.

The first survey for 2020 will be released on March 10.

Davidson is celebrating 15 years with Hit 105 this year.
