The Daily Telegraph’s deputy editor Gemma Jones announced as new editor of The Advertiser
Daily Telegraph deputy editor Gemma Jones has been appointed editor of SA’s biggest-selling newspaper, The Advertiser. She assumes the role next month.
News Corp’s Gemma Jones has been appointed editor of South Australia’s largest selling newspaper, The Advertiser.
Jones, 38, has worked at News for almost two decades, and is currently the deputy editor of The Daily Telegraph.
News Corp Australasia’s executive chairman Michael Miller said Jones “will bring to her new role considerable experience as an executive and reporter in Sydney, Canberra and New York.”
Jones has been a driving force behind several major news campaigns during her two-and-a-half years as deputy editor of The Daily Telegraph, Mr Miller said.
“Her leadership has been instrumental in driving community initiatives such as News Corp’s influential ‘Save Our Heroes’ campaign that addressed the plight of our often neglected war veterans, their families and loved ones,” he said.
“This ability to touch an accord with audiences will be important as The Advertiser — one of our most significant state mastheads — further positions itself for a more digital-focused future while strengthening its print edition and setting the news agenda for South Australia.’
Jones joined News in 2002 as a newsroom assistant. She was awarded a cadetship on The Daily Telegraph soon after, before becoming a state and federal political reporter for the newspaper, and then its chief-of-staff. She also spent time in the US, on a reporting secondment to New York.
In 2016, Jones was appointed national chief-of-staff for The Australian, before returning to The Daily Telegraph as deputy editor.
Jones will start as editor of The Advertiser in late September.
The Advertiser’s current editor Matt Deighton is stepping down for personal reasons after four years at the helm.
