Super Bowl 2017 ads: Watch the best of this year’s advertisements
More than 110 million people will see them - and this year’s feature humour, Hollywood stars, and a jarring stereotype | WATCH
Every year more than 30 companies vie to create the most-remembered 30 to 90 seconds of the Super Bowl by stuffing ads with Hollywood stars, humour and cute animals.
And with more than 110 million people expected to tune in on Monday (February 6, 10.30am AEST) to see the Atlanta Falcons take on the New England Patriots - and 30-second spots going for around $AU6.5 million - they need to scramble hard. Here’s what to expect this year.
The funny one
Who says romance is dead? The Skittles ad is one of our favourites.
The clever one
Now this is good. Squarespace’s expletive-ridden ad will tickle anyone who has ever tried to set up their own website.
The Aussie one
It’s not just American brands on display. BBQs, beaches, kangaroos ... Australian wine company Yellow Tail’s ad does nothing to end stereotypes. It features local model Ellie Gonsalves.
The one with the soundtrack
Keeping with the Aussie theme, Australian singer Sia will provide the soundtrack to the Lexus ad.
The political one
Budweiser’s ‘Born the Hard Way’ - which tells the story of co-founder Adolphus Busch and his journey as an immigrant from Germany to America in 1876 - was released just days after President Donald Trump’s immigration order, although Budweiser have denied they are making a political statement.
The one that got banned
First-time Super Bowl advertiser 84 Lumber also caused some Trump-related controversy, after their original ad got rejected by Fox. The building supplies company said they were told some of the imagery, including a border wall, steered too close to President Trump’s Mexico border rhetoric. The reworked ad doesn’t feature a wall at all and instead directs people online to see how the story of a mother and daughter ends.
The one with the avocados
Now for something much lighter. If you thought you’d heard the last of avocado-gate, think again. Avocados - specifically those from Mexico - will return to the zeitgeist on Monday. US comedian Jon Lovitz co-stars.
The one with the stunt
Lady Gaga might be performing on the roof of the stadium in the halftime show (that’s the rumour anyway) but Hyundai are attempting a stunt of their own. They are teaming with Deepwater Horizon director Peter Berg to actually film a 90-second ad while the Super Bowl is underway. Hyundai said the ad will show “off the field” moments captured during the game, and will air right after the contest ends. We obviously can’t show you that one, so instead, here’s the scheduled Tiffany ad starring Lady Gaga.
The live one
Similarily, Snickers have said they will air a live ad in the third quarter, starring US actor Adam Driver. They will also live stream the set of the commercial for 36 hours ahead of the spot. Here’s a teaser.
The Oscar-winners one
The celebrities don’t stop there, with Mercedes roping in the Coen brothers to direct their bikie themed ‘Easy Driver’ ad for the AMG GT Roadster, starring Easy Rider’s Peter Fonda.
The one with the NFL star
And let’s not forget the sport. Not only will Tom Brady be on the field, the New England Patriots quarterback will also star in Intel’s ad for their 360° technology.
