Has Budweiser, America’s favourite beer, waded into the debate over Donald Trump’s immigration ban?
The company has released its big-budget advertisement to be screened at next week’s Super Bowl, one of the most watched events on American television — and the timing couldn’t be more political.
The 60-second ad, which reportedly cost $US3 million to produce, tells the story of the company’s co-founder Adolphus Busch and his journey as an immigrant from Germany to America in 1876.
Titled “Born the Hard Way,” the ad depicts Busch being told, “You’re not wanted here! Go back home!” after he takes a boat to the US and faces numerous hardships prior to settling in St Louis and meeting co-founder Eberhard Anheuser.
However, the company has denied it is making a political statement about the President’s policies.
“Even though it happened in the 1850s, it’s a story that is super-relevant today,” vice president of marketing at Budweiser, Ricardo Marques, told Adweek.
“There’s really no correlation with anything else that’s happening in the country. We believe this is a universal story that is very relevant today because probably more than any other period in history today the world pulls you in different directions, and it’s never been harder to stick to your guns.”
Mike Bryne, the chief creative officer of the advertisement agency that helped create the commercial, Anomaly, said in a statement, “When Budweiser told us that they wanted to celebrate those who embody the American spirit, we realised the ultimate story lived within their own brand history. Adolphus Busch is the hero of the Anheuser-Busch American dream.”
Adweek reports it will cost the company up to $15 million to air the ad this weekend.
