Sky News Australia launches digital radio station
The popular news station is expanding its listenership and bringing its live news and commentary content to a new radio station.
Sky News Australia is launching its own digital radio station in its latest move to expand listenership across the country.
On Monday, the TV channel’s live stream will be available on the new DAB+ (digital audio broadcast) station called Sky News Radio in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and will include content from across its programming schedule, from daytime shows to prime-time commentary programs.
The radio station will be available to users on digital radios in the home, car and online radio apps.
Sky News Australia’s head of digital Tim Love said it would bolster Sky’s coverage by providing consumers with another platform to access its content.
“This year we’ve continued to grow our multi-platform offering and our launch into digital radio is another fantastic avenue that enables our network to extend the reach of our news, opinion and documentary programming to more Australians,” Mr Love said.
Data released last year by industry body Commercial Radio Australia showed since 2021 the number of commercial radio DAB+ only stations had grown by 48 per cent.
Sky News’ latest move comes after it launched its direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service in January and expanded its free ad-supported streaming TV channel Sky News Now on Samsung and LG devices. The new DAB+ station will feature daytime news programs including First Edition with Peter Stefanovic and AM Agenda with Laura Jayes, plus all the political news throughout the day with chief news anchor Kieran Gilbert.
In addition, the station will air the channel’s prime time shows that begin at 5pm throughout the week that are hosted by Chris Kenny, Peta Credlin, Andrew Bolt, Sharri Markson and Paul Murray, plus Sunday’s Outsiders program led by Rowan Dean, Rita Panahi and James Morrow.
Sky News Radio is also available at skynews.com.au, on the Sky News Australia app and platforms including the Nova Player, Smooth Player, Star 104.5 Player and FIVEAA Player apps. Sky News Australia is headed by chief executive officer Paul Whittaker and is owned by News Corp Australia, publisher of The Australian.
