Website news.com.au’s political editor Samantha Maiden was crowned the 2021 Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year for her series of stories that revealed the alleged rape of former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins in Parliament House in Canberra.
Herald Sun sports journalist Michael Warner’s scoop on the explosive Collingwood Football Club report into racism saw him take home two awards, including the Gold Quill and the Best Sports Report. The judges said Warner’s “genuine scoop set in train a series of events that rocked Australia’s biggest sporting club and its high-profile president to the core”.
“The revelation of the secret four-month-old Do Better Report also forced the AFL to reassess its efforts to combat racism in the sport,” the judges said.
The Herald Sun’s Olivia Jenkins was named Young Journalist of the Year, David Caird won the award for best news photograph, Alex Coppel was recognised for best sports photograph, while Genevieve Alison, Ashley Argoon, Andrea Thiis-Evensen and Jon Burton won the podcasting category.
The Herald Sun’s state politics team of Shannon Deery, Matt Johnston, Kieran Rooney and Mitch Clarke won the Quill for best coverage of an issue or event for their reporting on the Victorian government’s Covid strategy.
The Age’s sports journalist Caroline Wilson won the Melbourne Press Club’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her dedication to sports reporting and commentary.
