ABC Sydney’s breakfast radio hosts Wendy Harmer and Robbie Buck will be vacating the prestigious timeslot at the end of the year.

The duo, who have co-hosted the program for the past four years, announced on-air on Friday that their final show together would be on December 10.

Harmer, 65, said the ABC would be announcing the show’s new host, or hosts, in about a week.

The timing of the decision is curious, given that in the most recent radio survey, the Sydney program had achieved its highest ratings in several years.

But the pair was never able to top the city’s ratings during their four-year tenure, eclipsed by 2GB’s Alan Jones and his successor Ben Fordham, and more recently, KIIS1065’s Kyle and Jackie “O” show.

Buck and Harmer told listeners on Friday that the decision — which was made “quite a while ago” — was entirely theirs and they both felt that “the time was right” for a change.

Buck, 49, said he had been at the ABC for more than half his life, and wanted to spend next year travelling.

Harmer said she was hoping to work on some projects with her adult son “who has a start-up on the boil”.

The duo were brought together in 2017, when Buck was hosting the breakfast show and Harmer helmed the morning show. The two shows were effectively merged and subsequently co-hosted by the pair.

Both Harmer and Buck said they would remain involved with the ABC in the future “in some way, shape or form”.

Their final show together will be on December 10.

“We’re going to be annoying you for a few more weeks,” Buck said.
