ABC launches iView for expats
The ABC launches iView abroad, showcasing Australian content for Aussies missing home.
The ABC has launched its streaming service iView abroad, as part of the public broadcaster's Charter responsibilities to showcase Australian content and serve Australians living overseas.
The majority of the content that will be available on the iView app will be ABC produced content, including its News Channel, plus news and current affairs programs, including Q&A, Four Corners, Foreign Correspondent, Australian Story and Gardening Australia.
Chairwoman Ita Buttrose said “international broadcasting is one of the ABC's bedrock Charter responsibilities”.
“This service will open up a variety of outstanding Australian content to audiences around the world, as well as to the more than one million Australian expats who live, work or are travelling overseas,” she said.
“ABC Australia iView is an example of how, with determination and drive, we can deliver great value for international audiences, Australian taxpayers and the national interest.”
The ABC launched iView in Australia in 2008, well before free-to-air TV broadcasters, Seven, Nine and Ten launched their own streaming platforms.
International residents will be able to stream shows on iView via a free app.
A TV channel, called ABC Australia, is already available in 40 territories across the Indo-Pacific region, plus ABC Radio Australia as part of its Charter obligations.
