Coldplay frontman Chris Martin fell through a stage opening on the final night of the British rock band’s four-show run at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on Sunday.
Martin was reading signs held by fans in the crowd while walking backward when he accidentally stepped into a hole. As audience members reacted audibly, Martin, with the help of a nearby crew member, was assisted back to his feet, hardly missing a beat.

“That’s not planned,” he quipped, sounding surprised but unfazed. “Thank you for catching me.”
Martin’s fall followed a similar incident three weeks earlier when pop superstar Olivia Rodrigo fell through a stage trapdoor at Rod Laver Arena. Rodrigo, who reassured the audience she was unhurt, later told Jimmy Fallon that the fall was “really scary.”
Sunday night’s concert, Coldplay’s fourth consecutive sold-out show in Melbourne, included a nod to Australian singer John Farnham, who was reportedly in the audience.
The band’s Australian tour—their first since 2016—has featured a series of tributes and guest appearances. Coldplay played two exclusive sell-out shows in Perth in November last year.
On Wednesday, Martin dedicated the song “Sparks” to his friend, the late cricketer Shane Warne.
On Thursday, actor Ralph Macchio appeared onstage with the band for the filming of a new music video for the band’s song ‘The Karate Kid,’ from their latest album Moon Music.
Martin introduced Macchio, known for his role in The Karate Kid, with: “We called up Ralph Macchio. He’s now 63 years old and lives in New York City, except he’s not in New York City today,” Martin told the crowd. “With the permission of the Australian government, he might just be here in Melbourne.”
Coldplay will conclude their tour in Sydney this week, with four sold-out shows at Accor Stadium.
