Australian star Cate Blanchett’s march towards a third Oscar has been boosted with a nomination for best actress at the prestigious Screen Actors Guild awards.

Blanchett, who won the award for best drama actress at the 80th Golden Globes for her role as the egomaniacal conductor in Todd Field’s Tár, is favoured to win best lead female actor. Blanchett will go up against Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All At Once, Ana de Armas for Blonde, Danielle Deadyler for Till, and Viola Davis for The Woman King.

Martin McDonagh’s black comedy The Banshees of Inisherin and A24’s sci-fi fantasy Everything Everywhere All At Once lead this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.

At five nominations each, four for individual acting and an ensemble nod, both films tied the record for most SAG Award nominations that previously set by Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, and Doubt. These nominations are a reliable predictor of how the Oscar acting races will take shape.

In the ensemble category, both films will compete against the Margot Robbie-led Hollywood epic Babylon, Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical family drama The Fabelmans, and Sarah Polley’s excavation of sexual assault in a religious community, Women Talking.

Most surprisingly, Michelle Williams failed to secure lead actress recognition for her performance The Fabelmans.

Other snubs include the complete absence of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out sequel Glass Onion, Maria Schrader’s Weinstein journalist drama She Said, and Triangle of Sadness.

Globes winner Austin Butler scored a nomination for best lead male actor for his role in Baz Luhrmann’s ELVIS, alongside Colin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin, Brendan Fraser for The Whale, Bill Nighy for Living and Adam Sandler for Hustle.

On the TV side, the final season of Netflix’s Ozark led with four nominations. Earning a nod for best drama ensemble alongside The Crown, Better Call Saul, Severance and The White Lotus. Barry and Only Murders in the Building dominated comedy with three nods each.

Elizabeth Debicki will face off against Ozark’s Laura Linney and Julia Garner, Euphoria’s Zendaya and The White Lotus’s Jennifer Coolidge for best female actor in a drama series, for her role as Princess Diana in The Crown.

The SAG ceremony will take place on February 26th, and air on Netflix’s YouTube channel, before moving to the streamer in 2024.
