Macquarie Arms Hotel

13.5/20

Pub dining$$

Built in 1815, this is (supposedly) Australia's oldest pub - isn't it worth a visit just for that? When you go it's also worth having a feed. The menu is unassuming and deceptively delicious. The steaks are by far the most popular choice. Crumbed lamb cutlets, chicken wellington with its puff pastry, mushroom risotto and a hearty provencale on grilled perch are all worth ordering. Portions are huge. A local lady comes in especially to make the bread-and-butter pudding. Wine choices by the glass are limited, so buy a bottle or stick with beer. Live rock 'n' roll bands play here on Saturday nights.
