Lord Nelson Hotel
13/20
This pub first opened in 1841 and has been going strong ever since. Today it's restored to its sandstone and wood charm, albeit with discreetly placed TV screens and a back room full of car racing memorabilia. The beers are brewed on site, including the thrilling Old Admiral Dark Ale, and you can match this with sturdy food choices such as lamb kofte with Greek salad and minted yoghurt or a tasting plate dominated by a generous serve of brown bread, a sausage and a pork pie. Tourists and locals alike crowd the bar and you've got to be quick to nab a table.
