Lawson Park Hotel
12.5/20
$$
This large 19th-century hotel has tried to retain character through its refurbishments. The Red Heifer Grill is barn-like with an adjacent uninspiring beer garden. The main attraction is that you can grill an Angus steak or chicken breast yourself and save $4; get the chef to do it if you want to concentrate on sipping the local Farmer's Daughter semillon-sauvignon blanc. While the potato and leek soup and the chicken and beef burgers met an agreeable standard, desserts of apple pie and sticky date missed the mark. A lamb deep-dish pie was the bistro's best offer and scored well with the local Wild Oats cabernet merlot.
