This place is heaven for those with both social anxiety and a love of chicken, and judging by the crowds it’s a common dual-affliction. Computerised DIY-ordering keeps human interaction to a minimum. The justifiably famous chook – thighs or breasts for $6 a piece - comes in two deep-fried guises (one is a sweet Javanese-style, the other more savoury), plus a juicy chargrilled option. There are plenty of soup, rice and noodle-based alternatives, as well as deep-fried goodies on sticks, and pepes: tofu, mushroom or anchovies roasted in banana leaves. Crazily colourful drinks are a sweet relief from the savoury feasting.
