Umberto Espresso Bar
Italian
Old-school coffee bar meets inner-north cafe in Umberto's wood-panelled and whitewashed interior. The brunch menu proffers poached eggs with roma tomatoes and porky little chipolata sausages, or smoked salmon draped over frittelli di ceci (chickpea fritters - maybe a little dry). Then come classic panini. At night, trattoria-style specials are chalked along the wall - cotoletta alla Milanese or Italian sausages with caponata. Owner Marco Finanzio's dad, Umberto, pulls a trad Italian short black that is note perfect - especially with a moist, rich but not-too-sweet slice of house-made chocolate, almond and marsala torta.
