From Slurpee cocktails to Michelin-level ice cream – Melbourne’s new foodie pop-up is a must
Sponsored by 7-Eleven
7-Eleven may be known for food on the go, but with the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival (MFWF) taking off, it’s ready to up the ante and deliver mouth-watering morsels you’ll want to stay and savour, partnering with some Victorian foodie greats to create The Convenient Store.
Housed on Federation Square from Friday March 24 to Sunday April 2, the pop-up features some scrumptious, and surprising offerings. Trust us, spending some time here might just be the best thing you’ve done all year. Here are a few of the 7-Eleven x MFWF must-have menu items on offer.
Next-level sandwiches
The hot food options at 7-Eleven are about to get a helluva lot more delicious, because 7-Eleven inhouse hot deli sandwich counter Johnny’s Deli has joined forces with Shannon Martinez, of Collingwood fave Smith & Daughters, and Victor Liong from CBD go-to Lee Ho Fook, to make some of the best sandwiches in the city. Martinez has created ‘The Shannon’, a celebration of vegan deliciousness in the form of a plant-based schnitty. Or go ‘The Victor’ if you fancy your sandwich stuffed with flavour-fuelled, spicy pulled lamb. Want to just eat what you’re damn well used to? Fine! Johnny’s Deli classics, its brekky tortilla wrap and Reuben, are on sale as well, for those seeking that familiar slice of sandwich bliss.
Reuben pie
OK, so you feel like a Reuben, also want to mix things up? Well, that’s exactly what a food and wine festival is for. You want to live a little today, we don’t blame you – the Pie Thief collab is here for that. Footscray’s favourite pie purveyors have teamed up with Johnny’s Deli to create a Reuben pie that will blow your socks off. It’s everything you love about a Reuben, but enveloped in hot, flaky pastry. Don’t blame us if they become your new obsession.
Coffee Ice Magic
Who doesn’t like Ice Magic? There are few things more satisfying in life than watching silky chocolate sauce solidify over creamy ice cream, and then hearing the crack as you smash it to smithereens with your spoon. Add in one of the world’s best, albeit simplest, desserts, the hot-versus-cold mashup that is the affogato, and you’ve got yourself a pretty mesmerising dessert right there. And so with a little help from 7-Eleven’s Fairtrade coffee beans, Melbourne’s beloved gelateria Piccolina has come up with a coffee-spiked chocolate Ice Magic to rival all others, so you can have your affogato with added crunch, without having to crank up the coffee machine beforehand.
Banana bread ice cream
Speaking of ice cream (which is a conversation one should always be having, if we’re honest) Brunswick’s Luther’s Scoops has made a banana bread ice cream for the festival. Pastry chef Christian Williams has worked everywhere from Michelin-starred restaurants like The Fat Duck and The Clove Club in England to Lune here in Melbourne, so this guy knows his way around a kitchen. He prioritises sourcing the best ingredients, working directly with Victorian farmers to create ices with the freshest, purest and most captivating flavour profiles. With 7-Eleven’s beloved banana bread at its heart, this ice cream is a flavour bomb in a cup. But can you imagine if you poured a little of that coffee-chocolate Ice Magic on top? So it’s like a creamy banana, chocolate and coffee-themed club night for your tastebuds. Do it, we dare you.
Slurpee cocktails
7-Eleven is known for many things, but the Slurpee is hands-down iconic. The brain freeze alone is a rite of passage, and we won’t be told otherwise. But here’s the flex – take a Slurpee, and make it sophisticated. Each evening, The Convenient Store will be serving up Slurpee cocktails (for over 18s), thanks to its partnerships with Nagambie Brewery and Distillery, and Killik Handcrafted Rum. Pine Lime with Killik Silver Rum is a taste of the tropical; or try Creamy Soda with a hit of Nagambie’s 3608 Classic Dry Gin. They’re Slurpees, but adulted.
Not full yet? Check out the ultimate sandwich spread from Tom Sarafian of Sarafian Hummus. Or try Adam D’Sylva’s ultimate banana French toast (pick up the banana bread and recipe card from The Convenient Store). More sweetness comes by way of Miss Trixie Drinks Tea’s Alice Bennett and her ultimate cookie, bedecked with 7-Eleven’s new chocolate-coated lollies.
Melbournians, you’re welcome.
The Convenient Store presented by 7-Eleven is open daily 8am to 8pm from 24 March to 2 April at Federation Square as part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival.
