World's 50 Best Restaurants 2017: Quay makes longlist, Brae looks set to crack top 50
Did you hear a strange "whooshing" overnight? It was the sound of chefs all over the world releasing their breath, as the bottom half of the World's 50 Best Restaurants list dropped for 2017.
The 51 to 100 positions were released as a teaser to the main event, with this year's luxe ceremony to be held at Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Building on Wednesday, April 5.
Sydney's Quay is the only Australian restaurant to make an appearance so far, making the list for the ninth year running. Peter Gilmore's waterfront restaurant climbed three rungs from 98th position in 2016, but was well south of its best-ever ranking of 26th in 2011.
Australian chef Dave Pynt's Singaporean restaurant Burnt Ends came in at 53rd on the list.
Brae looks set to crack the top 50 for the first time. Dan Hunter's Birregurra restaurant, which opened in December 2013, jumped 22 positions, from 87 to 65, in 2016. Brae will likely join fellow Victorian restaurant Attica, which landed at 33 last year, and 32 in 2015.
Aussie expats Brett Graham (the Ledbury, London) and David Thompson (Nahm, Thailand) are also expected to hold their positions in the top 50.
Neil Perry's Rockpool Dining Group will cater the prestigious event next week, with a menu showcasing tuna from Mooloolaba, Spencer Gulf prawns, Coffin Bay oysters, Flinders Island spanner crab, plus Paroo kangaroo and Cape Grim beef.
If you weren't one of the lucky few to score an invitation, the whole ceremony will be streamed live at Melbourne's Federation Square, and Fairfax Events will present #50BestTalks in Sydney and Melbourne.
Peter Gilmore will join chefs Massimo Bottura (whose Modena restaurant Osteria Francescana is the current world number 1), Dominique Crenn (Atelier Crenn, San Francisco, Best Female Chef 2016) and Brett Graham (the Ledbury, London), at the Sydney Opera House on April 1.
In Melbourne, Daniel Humm and Will Guidara (Eleven Madison Park, New York), Gaggan Anand (Gaggan, Bangkok), Jordi Roca (El Celler de Can Roca, Girona, Spain) and Grant Achatz (Alinea, Chicago) will chat at Margaret Court Area on Monday, April 3. Full details here.
