The Weekly Special: Grape expectations for new head chef at southern suburbs wine bar
Plus a long weekend Mexican street food party, and the Subi Night Market returns.
South Korea, South Australia, South Fremantle: Kyo Kim’s cooking career has taken him to many southerly locales and restaurants with high-performing kitchens such as Madalena’s, Lulu La Delizia, Gibney, and Adelaide’s Shobosho starring on his CV.
But for Kim’s first head chef role at Beaconsfield Wine Bar, the former engineer is focusing on East and West, and showcasing flavours from his native Korea alongside elements from Japanese, Chinese and Italian cookery.
Think tofu parfait with a sake-yuzu jelly; mushroom udon with kizami nori and spring onion; raw Augusta nannygai with orange and fennel, plus other cosmopolitan small plates that chime with the wine bar’s confident, free-spirited nature.
A long weekend Mexican street food party
Speaking of border-crossing wine bars, Casa head chef Paul Bentley brings his high-octane Mexican(ish) cooking to Northbridge’s Astral Weeks on Sunday, September 28.
On the menu: tuna tostadas with smoked mackerel pâté; duck carnitas tacos; churros teamed with a horchata gelato; plus other mementos from the decade that Bentley spent working and cooking in Mexico’s Tulum and Guadalajara regions.
Respected local selector Rok Riley is on record-spinning duties, further underscoring the event’s unmissable status. Doors open from 4pm, walk-ins only.
Go behind the scenes of a green-thinking brewery
Since opening at the start of the year, Denmark microbrewery Lights Beach Brewing – formerly known as Ocean Beach Brewing – has been winning fans for its approachable beers and green-thinking initiatives, not the least of which is collecting its own rainwater to brew with.
On Saturday, October 4, and Sunday, October 5, the Lights Beach Brewing team is opening its brewshed to the public and hosting Taps and Wraps, a chance for guests to taste the beer where it’s produced, meet the maker and enjoy dumplings from Albany food truck Shakas Dumplings.
There will be six beers on tap to taste – including the final keg of the brewery’s limited seasonal release, Cacao Coconut Stout – and the event is family and dog-friendly.
The Subi Night Market (finally) returns this weekend
Like they say, the third time’s a charm. After two false starts due to weather, the Saturday night Subi Night Market returns to Market Square Park on Saturday, September 20.
Modelled on the village markets of Europe, this weekly market features sellers, live entertainment and, naturally, good things to eat.
A rotating roster of more than 40 food vendors will be in attendance, including Arancini Man (Italian rice balls), Dosa Dahling (South Asian dosas), ManekiNeko (Japanese street food) and Eiffel Eclairs (French pastries).
Subi Night Market runs every Saturday from 5pm to 9pm until Saturday, April 25.
Show honours for two Margaret River producers
Part of the Perth Royal Show, the Perth Royal Wine Show remains a major event for WA vignerons.

Another of the show’s key awards is the Jack Mann Memorial Medal, an annual award that recognises those who make outstanding contributions to the WA wine industry.
This year’s winners were Amy and Jeff Burch, the husband-and-wife owners of Howard Park Wines.
