South Yarra restaurant Ramblr to close
Hatted South Yarra restaurant Ramblr will close on March 2, with a new concept set to replace the critically acclaimed Asian-skewed contemporary diner.
The team behind Ramblr – Nick Stanton, Jon Harper, Guy Bentley and Mark Catsburg – will open a yet-to-be-revealed concept in the long, narrow Chapel Street space.
The four also own Leonard's House of Love nearby and the recently opened Leonardo's Pizza Palace in Carlton.
Ramblr opened in December 2016 and quickly gained a reputation for big-flavoured dishes such as calamari "noodles" with bone marrow and kimchi, and spicy Chinese bolognese.
Stanton says the unexpected success of their Carlton pizza joint – the kitchen is now making 140 kilograms of dough a week – means he's been unable to spend as much time stoking the fires at Ramblr as he would like.
"We could have kept it going but it's such experimental, niche cooking with so many elements going on that if I can't be there, it doesn't feel right," he says.
"Ramblr was a positive learning experience for us and we have actually taken some of its DNA and applied it to our other venues."
Stanton's spicy Chinese bolognese has migrated to Leonardo's, served atop a pizza with Sichuan pepper.
"In the future we may look at reopening Ramblr in a different location, but for now we need to focus on other things."
Ramblr's final dinner service will be on Saturday, March 2.
