Massive new Sydney brewpub, BrewDog, opens in converted South Eveleigh workshop
Multinational craft brewery BrewDog has today opened the doors to its first Sydney outpost, a sprawling $3.2 million brew pub in a converted locomotive workshop in South Eveleigh.
Beer enthusiasts will be stoked to find more than 40 brews on tap, including BrewDog's range of carbon negative beers from Murrarrie in Brisbane, such as the bright and citrusy Australian pale ale Punx XPA and the new fruity Hazy Jane New England IPA.
There will also be a range of forthcoming collaborations and beers on tap from local breweries such as Willie the Boatman and Grifter.
But the massive venue, which can fit more than 900 people across its indoor bar and leafy outdoor beer garden, isn't just for beer lovers, says Evan Gargaro. He's the state manager for Australian Venue Co., the pub operator that partnered with BrewDog to bring the Scottish-born brewery to NSW.
"The layout of the bar caters for all situations, whether you're after a quick lunch feed, date night in the bar, or a long afternoon session in the beer garden," Gargaro says. "People can expect a buzzing, but laid-back atmosphere."
It's an inclusive, dog- and family-friendly space that accommodates dietary restrictions with an extensive vegan menu, "hoppy meals" for children, alcohol-free drink options and gluten-free beer on tap.
The menu features pub favourites, think burgers, pizzas and cheesy garlic bread, with a focus on Australian suppliers, including Vannella Cheese and Brasserie Bread.
For those on a budget, there are year-round specials including $25 all-you-can-eat wings on Wednesdays and two-for-one vegan meals on Mondays.
Acclaimed architects Studio Y lead the factory conversion, retaining much of the original character of the heritage-listed property in the industrial fit out, which features polished concrete floors, concrete bars and a mix of booth, low and high table seating.
Good Food asked Gargaro how to make the most of a visit to BrewDog.
What's your pick of the drinks list?
Start with the award-winning Punk XPA, one of BrewDog's most loved beers. 100 per cent carbon negative, this beer is light, easy to drink, and lower on the ABV at 5.2 per cent – a great selection for anyone who loves a good crisp and sessionable summer delight.
For those after something other than beer, we have an extensive range of spirits, wines and a killer line-up of cocktails.
What are your three must-order meals?
The patriot burger ($25.95) is our most loved menu item. A handcrafted burger with sustainably sourced beef and all the classic toppings. You also have the choice to go meat free, with our plant-powered patriot burger ($27.95).
The mushroom tacos ($17.95) are a welcome addition to the BrewDog line-up, only available in Sydney. Stone-baked flour tortillas filled with pulled Fable mushroom, smoky sauce, red onion pickle and basil mayo.
And lastly, you can't go wrong with our buffalo wings (from $13.95). Wings are made to pair with craft beer!
When is the best time to check it out?
Afternoons take the cherry. You get the best of both worlds – basking in the Sydney sun in the beer garden until dusk, then once the sun goes down, move on inside and enjoy the great night time vibes over a meal and drink (or two).
Best seat in the house?
We're split on two spots. Indoors in front of the BrewDog bar. With easy access to the bar and a full vantage point of the entire setup, you'll be able to make the most of your BrewDog experience. And of course, anywhere in the beer garden. Coming into summer, this dog-friendly location will be the perfect spot for families, pet owners…really anyone that loves a good time in the sun.
Do we need a booking?
We'll be taking bookings from day one at 4pm. But don't worry, 75 per cent of the bar will be walk-ins so anyone can pop down and enjoy what's on offer.
