Maker's Dozen opens in Exchange building at Darling Square
Good things come in 12s: eggs, the number of days of Christmas and Shakespeare's favourite night.
Now you can add Maker's Dozen to the list, a "collective" of food venues that's opened at the Kengo Kuma-designed Exchange building at Darling Square.
"It's like a modern take on the sort of [eating] places you find in markets in cities like Madrid," says Frank Dilerna, the owner of Boque by Tapavino, one of the venues in the new space.
Dilerna, who also owns Tapavino and Balcon in the CBD, says there is already a camaraderie at Maker's Dozen, forged from working in proximity to other operators in the new space.
Dilernia is trialling a new concept at Boque by Tapavino. "We're doing a razor clam omelette and a chorizo burger," he says.
Good Food revealed a number of incoming venues during the build-up to its opening, including Boque and Saga Lyte, a spin-off from Sydney cake king Andy Bowdy's Saga venue in Enmore.
The pin-up boy of sweet-toothed Sydneysiders since his days in the kitchen at Hartsyard, Bowdy's cake repertoire is available and he's been as good as his word, telling Good Food last year he would do a line of pies at the new venue.
Saga Lyte even has a Bowdy-style sausage roll.
Other arrivals include Mr Bao, Bucket Boys Bar, Pasta Wafu, and Hopper Kade. But we couldn't help but notice only 11 outlets have opened.
"I'm afraid that's not been confirmed at this stage," a Darling Square spokeswoman says of the mystery 12th venue.
Open daily, various hours.
