Just Open: Mr Wednesday, Fairfield
Because of his habit of regularly dipping into conversations midway through, Dylan Breen's old boss once dubbed him "Mr Wednesday". Now that 22-year-old Breen (a trained carpenter and first-time cafe owner) has opened his own place he's bestowed it, with its obscure Fairfield address "sort of in the middle of nowhere on a quiet street", with the same moniker.
Set in an otherwise undeveloped retail strip opposite the Hurstbridge train line, the seven-day operation will be a godsend for the post drop-off set from the nearby primary school, as well as regulars from its monthly weekend farmers' market.
Interiors – largely Breen's handiwork – feature what he likes to call a "vintage industrial vibe", plus there's a handful of outdoor seats on the street (and plans for more).
Chef Erica Nelson (ex-Industry Beans) is offering a tasty seasonal menu studded with hits like sourdough avocado smash with chevre and lemon myrtle, vanilla chai porridge with caramelised nut crumble and fresh cream, and a hefty breakfast burger which lumps fried egg, bacon, tomato jam and a (gasp) fried potato cake together in a brioche bun.
Bread and pastries come from Rustica Sourdough, plus Nelson is doing a good range of cakes and pastries in-house, and coffee is from Industry Beans.
Open Mon-Fri 6.30am-4.30pm, Sat-Sun 7.30am-4pm.
