Good Weekend

The April 27 Edition

It sometimes feels like a truism to say that “young people” are obsessed with their phones, prefer visuals over words, and no longer read. But before you take that as truth, consider the counter trend of under-30s who adore novels. Cindy Crawford’s 22-year-old model daughter, Kaia Gerber, is the poster girl for the movement; her Library Science book club has attracted more than 35,000 Instagram followers in the few months since its relaunch. Melbourne actor Angourie Rice is another who, at 23, sees reading as central to her being. She has her own bookish podcast, has co-written a book inspired by Jane Austen, and will appear at the Sydney Writers’ Festival in May. Oh, and did I mention her Hollywood career? Rice has appeared alongside the likes of Ryan Gosling and Nicole Kidman in films and TV shows since she was 11. As Brodie Lancaster writes in today’s cover story, Rice seems like an old soul. Hers will be, I suspect, a name worth remembering. Editor, Katrina Strickland
