Good evening, and thanks for reading our live coverage, here are the main stories of the day:
- Treasurer Jim Chalmers says all 36 outcomes from the jobs summit will happen this year including new rules allowing pensioners to earn an additional $4000 before their pension is reduced. This will be on top of the $7800 each year they can earn under existing rules to help tackle nation’s skills shortage.
- Permanent migrant numbers will be lifted from 160,000 places to 195,000 to help tackle the jobs crisis. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has supported lifting the migration cap, but has expressed scepticism about whether Labor will be able to deliver.
Nationals leader David Littleproud suggested waiving HECS debt for registered nurses who work in aged care. It comes after the Victorian state government unveiled a plan to pay for the university fees of more than 10,000 student nurses and midwives if they work in the public sector.
- The NSW government backed away from its threat to wage war against the rail union, after an ultimatum to cease all industrial activity on Sydney’s public transport network by Friday was ignored.
- Argentina’s Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was unharmed on Friday when a man with a loaded gun tried to shoot her, only for the gun not to go off.
I hope you have a great Friday night and weekend. We’ll be back with more live news on Monday from 7am.
