It’s choose-your-own-adventure when it comes to enjoying a Market Lane coffee at Melbourne’s oldest market. There are three branches: the light-flooded Dairy Hall bar is best for takeaway (but it does get very busy), the red-brick corner cafe on Victoria Street has plenty of outdoor tables where you can linger with a pastry from the cabinet, and the newest outlet on Queen Street is the quietest – you’re almost always guaranteed a seat.

Famously, this roaster doesn’t make soy milk coffees but their oat and dairy coffees, filter brews and iced drinks are consistently good. Skilful staff are serene, just like the design of each space.

Good to know: Every location sells beans to take home, but Victoria Street is the only one that serves sweet and savoury pastries.
