A dietitian ranks seven popular supermarket yoghurts (and reveals her top picks)
From Greek to plain to no added sugar, yoghurt options are proliferating in the supermarket. So which one is right for you?
The yoghurt aisle can be a nutritional minefield. You’ll find high protein, low sugar, no added sugar, Greek, Greek-style, natural, plain and flavoured products.
So many options mean it can be tricky to decipher which one is the best, and specifically which variety is best for you.
Yoghurt is generally nutrient-rich food, offering a number of essential nutrients including calcium, protein and magnesium, and in many varieties a good dose of the good bacteria known to nourish and keep the digestive system healthy.
Yoghurt is such a popular household staple that we thought it was time to take a closer look at the nutritional profile of some of the best-selling yoghurts in supermarkets, and share the ones I frequently recommend to my own clients to support their dietary goals.
The top supermarket sellers rated
1. YoPRO Vanilla
With 15 grams of protein per serve, no added sugars and natural sweeteners including rice starch and fruit pulp, you will be hard-pressed to find a better tasting, high-protein sweet yoghurt.
2. Chobani Greek Plain
With a simple ingredient list, this product is naturally high in protein thanks to its traditional straining process, which increases the overall protein content. This is compared to the many supermarket varieties of Greek yoghurts that utilise a “Greek style” of processing using thickeners and gums to create a similar consistency to true Greek yoghurt.
3. Farmers Union Greek Style
Relatively high in fat thanks to its whole milk and cream base, this yoghurt has no additives and offers probiotics to support digestive health but lacks the protein content a snack or meal should ideally have. It’s a good option for lighter sauces and baking as the higher fat content creates a creaminess and works well in baking, despite being a Greek-style rather than traditional Greek yoghurt.
4. Jalna Greek Natural
Completely natural, this yoghurt is a good option for baking but contains much more fat and less protein than some of the newer yoghurts in the market.
5. Farmers Union Greek Style Vanilla
This option has added sugars, creating a sweet yoghurt with almost 3 teaspoons of sugars per serve. There are better Greek style yoghurts available that contain less fat and sugar.
6. Tamar Valley Greek Style
Another simple plain yoghurt made only from milk and cream that offers less protein and more fat than the many high-protein low-fat yoghurts now available.
7. Yoplait 98% Fat Free Vanilla
Heavily processed, and one of the few yoghurts to still contain artificial sweetener. There are better, more natural yoghurts you can find that will offer more nutrients and be a lot more filling than this option.
My top picks nutritionally
Evia Greek Skim
With little other than skim milk as its base and a massive 17g of natural protein per serve, this yoghurt is hard to go past for nutrition and flavour (if you can find it). It’s one of the few supermarket yoghurts that are true Greek yoghurts, thanks to the traditional straining methods used to concentrate the natural protein content of the yoghurt.
YoPRO
Whether you opt for the larger tubs, flavoured pouches and pots or higher 20g protein Perform range pots for active people, you can’t go past this sweet yoghurt option when it comes to overall nutritionals and low-calorie load.
Chobani
Low in fat and high in protein, this is one of the best plain, low-calorie yoghurts you will find to mix with cereal, smoothies or fruit.
Activia
One of a small handful of fruit yoghurts that contain no added sugar and low fat. Not only does this yoghurt contain nothing artificial, it has scientifically proven probiotics to support digestive health.
