The Federal Hotel
16/20
Contemporary$$
The Alstonville bypass has taken the Federal Hotel off the Bruxner Highway but it remains firmly on the food lover's map. Outdoor dining - on the street- front verandah or in the beer garden - is a quieter experience now fewer cars come through. The menu ranges from baked Junee lamb rump to American-style baby back ribs. Mouth-watering blackboard specials such as Moroccan lamb tagine with jasmine rice and tzatziki and snapper poached in coconut cream change regularly. Offerings feature local mangos, macadamias and prawns so large it's easy to see why the region was once home to the Big Prawn.
