Lao Fu Qing
Chinese$$
The menu at this shiny glass-fronted eatery makes one hefty picture book, a take on The Very Hungry Caterpillar with an epic, exotic twist: On Monday he ate crunchy deep-fried prawns buried in a fragrant mountain of toasted desiccated coconut. On Tuesday came the peppery kapow of pot-braised chilli beef. On Wednesday he devoured the signature dish of Guilin noodles topped with fried peanuts, spring onion, coriander, pickled cabbage and thinly sliced beef, with a side of beef broth. Replace the caterpillar with ravenous young people and it's a true story that could last months - but good luck fitting into that cocoon at the end.
