Kogarah Hotel
16/20
Pub dining
This 1879 pub is crammed between shops in a busy shopping district. The small specials blackboard behind the tiny bar in the big upstairs bistro offers some interesting choices, and the standard menu covers the basics with an intriguing Asian influence. The home-made Thai curry puffs had just-right pastry with a mild filling, and were enough as an entree to share. Beer-battered flathead fillets were melt-in-mouth and the salt-and-pepper prawn and calamari salad with zesty roasted cashew dressing a hit. Prices are low, servings generous, there's an excellent wine list and the service efficient and, well, jaunty.
