Sonido

South American

The offhand spunkiness of this South American cafe is mightily attractive. Sonido’s raw edges, tatty album menu covers and dinged aluminium jugs (for smooth Colombian hot chocolate) allow folks stepping off designer-dense Gertrude Street some easy, upbeat downtime. From the tiny open kitchen, staff can flip vinyl on the turn-table, and an arepa on the grill. Made from cornmeal, arepas come sandwiching melty cheese or topped with nicely folded, deep-yellow scrambled eggs; or with beans and a crown of feta, and sides of avocado and fresh salsa. At night, a cuba libre goes nicely with char-grilled chicken arepa and Latin tunes.
