A specialist deli and sandwich shop is heading to Altona
The march of serious sandwiches continues across Melbourne, this time, westside in Altona. With the help of consultant Sam Pinzone, Jayden Costello, who owns La Bodega barbers in Williamstown, and Matthew Defina are opening Matteo's, a high-end deli in a former TAB shop on Pier Street
Costello originally planned to start selling deli goods from his barber shop, but joined forces with Defina who had bigger ambitions. They're hoping to become a destination for quality deli good for the area, offering Calendar cheeses, coffee from Industry Beans, Raymond Capaldi's Wonder Pies, Lescure butter and other top -helf products from Simon Johnson and a list of substantial deli sandwich classics they hope will be the major draw.
The menu will all be available either on Vietnamese rolls or ciabatta though the contents all skew towards New York Italian classics. The main offerings include a cold cuts roll with iceberg, tomato, chilli pickle and a capsicum pesto; a well buttered mortadella sambo on your choice of bread and a Reuben-esque sandwich with provolone, pastrami, dill pickles, and a dressing Pinzone says is like a spicy Big Mac sauce. Weekly specials including nduja with burrata, olive oil and thyme and buttermilk fried chicken.
The space sits on Pier Street in a former TAB. There will be a handful of seats outside, but it's mostly a grab and go situation. Currently there is no liquor license but they intend to get one in the near future.
Matteo's opens April 11 at 30 Pier Street, Altona, matteosdelicatessen.com.au.
