A US Marine is recovering from emergency surgery in Royal Darwin Hospital after an alleged late night violent assault at Monsoons last weekend, the NT News can reveal.

A spokesman for the Marin Rotational Force — Darwin said the incident was now the subject of a joint investigation between local police and the US Naval Criminal Investigation Service.

NT Police issued an appeal for witnesses after the 31-year-old was found unconscious outside the popular Mitchell St nightclub in the early hours of last Sunday morning.

A police spokesman said the marine had been ejected from the venue before apparently becoming involved in an altercation.

“The male sustained injuries rendering him unconscious, he was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition,” he said.

Local investigators have now charged a 33-year-old man with unlawfully causing serious harm and he is due to face the Darwin Local Court next week.

On Friday, the MRF-D spokesman said the marine had required surgery but remained in a stable condition.

“We are aware of an incident early on the morning of Sunday, April 11, where a US service member from the Marine Rotational Force — Darwin was involved in an altercation at the establishment Monsoons that resulted in his own hospitalisation,” he said.

“The marine was the only person injured and at this time he is in a stable condition following surgery at Royal Darwin Hospital.

“This incident is under joint investigation by the NT Police and NCIS and MRF-D is in full co-operation with those authorities to ensure the safety of the community in which we live and work.”

The injured man was the first of two marines admitted to RDH, with another 21-year-old man from MRF-D currently receiving treatment at the hospital after testing positive for coronavirus later on Sunday.

He is asymptomatic and was moved from quarantine to hospital, in line with established procedures.

The Department of Chief Minister and Cabinet said that “due to strict quarantine measures in place for all arriving marines”, the case was “promptly detected” and the marine “had no direct contact with the general community”.
