A 75-YEAR-OLD woman has been killed after a horrific three-vehicle crash on a notorious stretch of road in Darwin’s rural area overnight.
Detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit were called to the scene of a fatal crash on the Stuart Hwy in Livingstone on Saturday night.
Three vehicles were involved in the crash just south of the Cox Peninsula Rd intersection at about 9pm.
A 75-year-old woman driving a silver Toyota Kluger station wagon declared deceased at the scene.
Two other drivers were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Police are seeking assistance from anyone who may have seen the Kluger being driven in an erratic manner prior to the crash.
The incident happened only meters away from two roadside crosses which mark the site of another tragic crash that claimed the lives of 19-year-old Sharnay Hassell and 25-year-old Terry Luxford in 2015.
There have been several fatal crashes along that part of the Stuart Hwy in recent years, including a two-car collision in April which killed Rosanna Neff, 33, and a rollover that killed another woman there last January.
Last night, both lanes of the Stuart Hwy were closed between Cox Peninsula Rd and Townend Rd with traffic diversions in place.
That section of the Stuart Hwy has now been opened.
According to NT Police’s road toll website, there have been 26 fatal crashes on Northern Territory roads in 2020.
The 2020 toll compares to 23 deaths on NT roads at the same time last year.
