A MAN has been hospitalised with head injuries after he was allegedly assaulted with a scooter and left unconscious on a footpath in Alice Springs on Saturday night.

Police were called to an incident outside Roberto’s Pizza in Todd St on Saturday night, where they found a 34-year-old man lying unconscious on the footpath with head injuries.

NT Police Southern Watch Commander Senior Sergeant Adrian Kidney said CCTV footage showed the man had been involved in an altercation with two male youths before the alleged assault.

“One youth struck the victim from behind to the head with a scooter, knocking him unconscious,” he said.

“Whilst he lay unconscious on the ground, the second youth ran up and kicked him to the head (in what) can only be described as a coward act before running from the scene.”

A St John Ambulance crew attended the scene and transported the man to Alice Springs Hospital.

The man was reported to be in a stable condition in hospital on Sunday, suffering from a fractured skull and a sinus fracture.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the alleged assault to contact them on 131 444 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
