Man charged over Katherine crash on Thursday

POLICE have arrested and charged a man over a crash on Thursday that left two people in a critical condition

A 20-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested and charged over the crash in Katherine on Thursday that left two men in critical conditions.

Following the man’s release from hospital he was charged with driving a motor vehicle causing harm or death, recklessly endangering and cause serious harm, breach of bail, driving a vehicle in a dangerous manner and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The single vehicle crash led to two men aged 24 and 19 being flown to Royal Darwin Hospital.

NT Police Northern Watch Commander Vicki Koum said yesterday officers in Katherine spotted a red Holden Commodore allegedly travelling at high speed in the northbound lane of the Stuart Hwy just before 11pm on Thursday.

“They later located the vehicle which had crashed into a light pole on a median strip, the vehicle was on fire, and a water main had burst from the impact,” she said.

“Police were able to extract the driver and the front passenger, but the two passengers in the rear were pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extracted by the fireys.

“All four were injured, and the two rear passengers had critical injures.”

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Darwin Local Court on Tuesday 15 December 2020.
