EMERGENCY services rushed to rescue four people, including two injured critically, from the fiery wreckage of a single-vehicle crash on the Stuart Hwy overnight.
NT Police Northern Watch Commander Vicki Koum said police in Katherine spotted a red Holden Commodore travelling at high speed in the northbound lane of the Stuart Hwy just before 11pm on Thursday.
“They later located the vehicle which had crashed into a light pole on a median strip, the vehicle was on fire, and a water main had burst from the impact,” she said
“Police were able to extract the driver and the front passenger, but the two passengers in the rear were pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extracted by the fireys.
“All four were injured, and the two rear passengers had critical injures.”
NT Police Superintendent Craig Garland, from Katherine police, said two men aged 24 and 19, had been airlifted by CareFlight to Royal Darwin Hospital, with critical injuries.
Supt Garland said the two other men who had been in the car, aged 20 and 32, are in Katherine hospital in stable condition.
St John Ambulance NT operations manager Craig Garraway said CareFlight had flown the two critically injured passengers to Darwin and then returned to Katherine in case they needed to retrieve the two remaining passengers.
Anyone who was travelling in the area and may have observed a red Holden Commodore are urged to contact police on 131 444 or Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The Stuart Hwy was closed between the Bicentennial intersection and Giles St this morning with traffic diversions are in place.

Supt Garland said traffic diversions in the area of the crash were expected to remain in place for most of the day.
Motorists are being asked to avoid the area if possible.
