A WOMAN has been rushed to hospital after being run over twice during a bizarre hit-and-run in Katherine overnight.

Northern Watch Commander Vicki Koum said police responded to an incident where a pedestrian was struck on Katherine Terrace at about 9.45pm on Tuesday.

“A group of people were walking across Katherine Terrace heading towards Lindsey St when a Toyota HiLux travelling south on Katherine Terrace at the same time struck a woman pedestrian,” she said.

She said the driver stopped and immediately attended to assist the injured woman when another male pedestrian, who was in the same group, assaulted the driver by punching and kicking him multiple times.

“The male pedestrian that assaulted the driver then stole the HiLux, did some doughnuts, drove erratically around the scene,” Crd Koum said.

“He ended up running over the legs of the already injured pedestrian – so she was run over twice.

“The male who assaulted the driver then drove off with the stolen motor vehicle and headed down the Stuart Hwy.”

Police pursued the vehicle however terminated the pursuit due to high speeds.

The female pedestrian and male driver were both taken to Katherine Hospital.

Police are searching for a white Toyota Hilux with NT registration 941067.
