Australia's domestic violence crisis

A WOMAN charged with murdering a man in what police have described as a “domestic violence incident” has faced court for the first time.

Yvonne Lulda, 36, faced the Darwin Local Court on Monday charged with the stabbing murder of a 26-year-old man in Palmerston on Thursday night.

Her lawyer, Joe Bourke, did not apply for bail but said she had been “placed at risk and was in the medical unit”.

In remanding Lulda in custody, judge Dick Wallace said the case would be listed for a preliminary examination mention next month.

“They’re a bit worried that you might hurt yourself, Ms Lulda, so I’m signing one of the prisoner at risk orders in the meantime so they’ll take particular care of you,” he said.

Lulda will return to court on August 17.

Woman charged with murder after stabbing death

POLICE have charged a 36-year-old woman with murder following an alleged stabbing in Palmerston on Thursday, in what investigators are describing as a “domestic violence incident”.

Officers charged the woman late on Friday after earlier responding to a report that a 26-year-old man had been assaulted with an edged weapon on Priest Cct in Gray.

At the time, police said the woman was known to the man who paramedics unsuccessfully tried to revive at the scene.

Drops of blood could be seen staining the footpath near the intersection with Mew St on Friday while red police tape cordoned off the alleged crime scene.

A home first aid kit and its contents, along with one right sneaker, lay sprawled across the small car park of the cordoned off apartment complex.

On Saturday, Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey said anyone experiencing domestic violence should call the police.

“This is a tragic incident and police would urge anyone experiencing domestic or family violence to reach out on 131 444 or in an emergency call triple-0,” he said.
