Scenes from the fatal Thursday night stabbing in Palmerston

HORRIFIC screams broke the silence of a cool Thursday night in the Palmerston suburb of Gray following the stabbing death of a 24-year-old man.

At 8.10pm on Thursday night police received a report a man had been assaulted with an edged weapon on Priest Cct.

Police and St John NT provided first aid on arrival but the man died at the scene.

A 36-year-old woman, who was known to the victim, was arrested at the scene and is expected to be charged by detectives from Major Crime.

Five police cars, including forensics, are at the scene that covers Mew St and Priest Cct.

Drops of blood now stain the pavement while red police tape cordons off the 120m crime scene.

A home first aid kit and its contents, along with one right sneaker, lay sprawled across the small car park of the cordoned off complex of apartments.

A neighbour said they heard screaming during the night but said it was “no different” to any other night in the area.

A resident who lived nearby the crime scene and wished to go only by his first name, Andrew said he didn’t hear any commotion until the emergency crews arrived and began to work on the 24-year-old man who was fatally stabbed.

While crews were working to save the man’s life, Andrew said “we heard them go ‘clear’” and that was the first noise he heard from the incident.

“There is commotion in this street all the time so you don’t hear a lot, it just becomes background noise,” he said.

“Just the fact that it happened right outside our window. I feel disturbed.

“We are so used to commotions so when there is one that is serious, it doesn’t stand out and we don’t take any notice of it … I think that’s terrible actually.”

“Investigations into this incident are ongoing,” Detective Superintendent Jak Evans said.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 131 444. Please quote reference number 10053843.”
