The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A TEENAGER who survived a horror highway crash that claimed the life of a well-known Territory rapper has been brought before the courts.

A 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in court on Tuesday in relation to a fatal crash on the Stuart Highway, near Manton Dam.

The teenager was charged with recklessly endangering life, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, robbery, damage to property and driving while unlicensed.

The young boy was allegedly one of five children, aged 9, 11, 14, 15 and 15, in a car when it rolled off the highway and into a tree on Sunday night, July 3.

All five children were thrown from the car as the body of the wreck wrapped around the tree.

A 15-year-old boy and well-known musician died in the crash, while the four surviving children were airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital.

The NT News understands on Monday night one teenager was critical while another required surgery for spinal injuries.

On Monday, Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner alleged the boys were in a stolen car and were involved in a robbery in Adelaide River the night of the fatal crash.

Only two days after the horror crash, the 14-year-old was brought before the courts for a first hearing via a video link.

The NT News understands the 14-year-old was discharged from hospital the same day as this case.

He is currently on remand in a youth justice centre, with a bail application hearing set for July 15.

On Monday, NT Police alleged their early investigations indicated the five boys were not wearing seatbelts when the allegedly stolen car rolled and crashed into a tree.

NT Police was contacted to confirm if the remaining surviving children would also be charged.

The Office of the Children’s Commission has confirmed the 15-year-old who died in the crash was in the care of Territory Families.

“The child was a talented music artist known for his humour and personality and will be fondly remembered,” Acting Children’s Commissioner Nicole Hucks said.

A Territory Families spokesman said they could not comment on the matter, as it was under investigation.

Under NT law, a coronial inquest will be required to investigate the child’s death in the coming months.
