Man caught speeding 199km/h on the Stuart Highway in Darwin

A man has been arrested after he was caught travelling more than 100km/h over the speed limit in the Top End.

A 28-year-old man has been caught speeding on a major Darwin road, recording 199km/h in a 90km/h zone.

NT Police said the man was driving along the Stuart Highway when members of the Darwin Road Policing Section detected the dangerous activity about 9pm on Saturday.

He has been charged with driving at a dangerous speed and will face court in Darwin.

“To travel at that speed on a metropolitan thoroughfare open to the public is unconscionable conduct,” Northern Watch Commander Rob Overall said.

“Furthermore, the driver downplayed his actions to police when stopped showing a flagrant disregard towards the safety of himself and other road users.”

Social media users reported seeing the alleged driver over the weekend.

“Saw him on Friday speeding through the commuters travelling home from work,” Sandy Alp said.

“I saw this car flying down Hicks Road at about 8.45 — Glad it’s off the road,” Laura Tune wrote.
