Friday August 9: Fire crews are battling a fire at a Darwin roadworks site, with thick smoke covering the busy major road.
NT Fire Incident Map has confirmed a bushfire near the intersection of Tiger Brennan Drive and Tivendale Rd, Wishart, was initially reported at 1pm Friday.
The NT Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was burning on one or more fronts, but “effective containment strategies are not in place for the entire perimeter”.
“Fire originated on the Wishart side of Tiger Brennan and crossed the highway over to the Berrimah side shortly after,” a NTFRS spokesman said.
“Active fire may occur close to the roadside.
“Firefighting crews may be working close to the roadside. Smoke from this fire may affect visibility.”
It is understood at least three crews are involved in the operation with the fire reported as “being contained” around 2.20pm.
Fire crew aerial photographs of the blaze show how extensive the fire’s path reached, jumping over Tiger Brennan Drive and singeing bushland near the NT Berrimah Fire Station headquarters.
The fire appeared to be burning on both sides of the road near the Berrimah Rd section of the overpass, with the fire front headed towards Tivendale Rd near bushland close to the recently demolished Don Dale Detention Centre.
It is understood there are no reports of structural loss.

POLICE ARREST MAN WHO ALLEGEDLY TRIED TO STEAL CAR WITH PASSENGER INSIDE
August 8: NT Police have arrested a man who allegedly stole a car while its driver was picking up a takeaway and another passenger was still inside.
Police were alerted to the incident after the car crashed on the Victoria Highway near Bicentennial Rd in Katherine at about 7.45pm on Tuesday.
The vehicle was parked outside a restaurant on the Victoria Highway, as its driver was inside picking up takeaway food.
Police allege it was then a 40-year-old man allegedly entered the driver’s side of the car, causing the driver’s wife, who was still inside, to flee.
The offender is then alleged to have unlawfully driven the car away at speed before he crashed and rolled the vehicle.
He was the only occupant at the time of the crash.
Police arrested the alleged offender at the scene, who was taken to the Katherine District Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Senior Sergeant Warren Scott said the quick response was a credit to the responding officers.
“I commend the quick response and apprehension of the offender by our Katherine general duties officers who did an excellent job alongside our Dog Operations Unit members.
“Northern Territory Police will continue to work tirelessly to serve and protect the community.”
Police are continuing to investigate and urge anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident to make contact n 131 444 and quote reference NTP2400076743.
No charges have been laid.
