Darwin Channel 9 news reporter Georgie Dickerson has faced the Darwin Local Court for the first time after the 25-year-old was last month charged with impersonating a police officer.

In seeking an adjournment until February 20, Dickerson’s barrister, Mary Chalmers SC, indicated the charge would be contested and asked for the remainder of the police’s brief of evidence to be filed seven days before her next appearance.

“We do have most of the brief and the officer is apparently attending to an outstanding statement,” she said.

In granting the adjournment, judge Dick Wallace said Dickerson would be excused if represented on the next occasion.

“You don’t have to come to that mention as long as you’re legally represented at it,” he said.

“But if that’s what you choose to do, make sure you get in touch with your lawyer soon afterwards to find out where the case is going and when you do need to appear.”

In a statement issued on December 12, NT Police said the alleged offence related to an incident in Palmerston on October 17.

In response, Channel 9’s national director of news and current affairs, Darren Wick, threw his support behind Dickerson.

“Nine News denies any wrongdoing and strongly supports our reporter,” he said.

Dickerson is the daughter of Dubbo Regional Council mayor Mathew Dickerson, who said he was “confident that the correct outcome will be achieved”.

“The situation is before the courts, so I think it would be inappropriate for me to make any comment at this stage,” he said.

Dickerson has been a senior reporter at 9 News Darwin since May last year after a stint as a journalist at 7 Regional in Tamworth, formerly known as Prime7 Tamworth.

Before that she worked as a producer at Sky News.

Dickerson also describes herself online as a former president of Dunmore Lang College, a residential college at Macquarie University in Sydney’s north where she studied media after graduating from St John’s College Dubbo.

“I have a strong passion for Journalism and Radio,” she writes.

“Studying media has allowed for my development of a set skills (sic) for a successful career in the media.”

In December Dickerson posted a photo of herself outside a Darwin police station following a live cross to the Today Show.

“Fantastic and crazy few days at work covering all of the news surrounding croc wrangler Matt Wright,” she wrote.
