Richmond star Dustin Martin joins Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian on Maldives outing

It’s the unlikely friendship between sporting superstars that has the whole sports world buzzing — but just what did Dustin Martin and Serena Williams get up to in the Maldives?

Dustin Martin has long been known as a prime performer on and off the footy field, but this year the Richmond star’s post-season celebrations have hit new heights.

He came to ­global attention this week when tennis legend Serena Williams posted a video of Martin hanging out with her and her ­tycoon husband in the Maldives.

Martin’s appearance alongside tennis royalty would have surprised most, but to those who know him best it was just another stop on Dusty’s excellent end-of-season adventure.

Since helping the Tigers to the flag in September, Martin has enjoyed jaunts to the US, been chauffeur-driven long distance to a mate’s wedding, and now is said to have open-ended ticket to Europe with no real plan of where he might end up next.

In the Maldives in the ­Indian Ocean, the dual Norm Smith medallist, 28, teamed with Williams and her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, on an idyllic break at an exclusive resort.

Videos shared to Williams’ 11.8 million Instagram followers on Tuesday night showed the group hanging out at beachside restaurant The Ledge, run by Australian-born chef Dave Pynt.

In one clip Martin is seen having a drink while Ohanian plays music behind him. In another they are about to board a boat.

Williams, who boasts 23 grand slam ­titles during her stellar career, signed off her last ­update by saying: “We’ve had so much fun. We are living our best lives eating fried chicken sandwiches.”

Martin still has some time left to continue to make the most of his off-season, as Richmond players with four-plus years at the club are not due back until December 2.

So far, he has been seen partying with pals including Collingwood great Dane Swan in Las Vegas.

And he was photographed with Swan, Pies president Eddie McGuire and friends at swanky West Hollywood eatery Tesse last month.

MCG insiders on Wednesday confirmed Martin finally picked his car up from the ground two weeks ago, after leaving it there after Richmond’s Grand Final trouncing of GWS on September 28. Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt last month revealed that ­Martin hired a private driver to take him on a seven-hour round trip from Melbourne to Deniliquin for former teammate Sam Lloyd’s wedding.

Sportsbet on Wednesday listed Martin a $4.50 chance of ­appearing in Williams’ player box at the Australian Open tennis in January, and $3.50 for the tennis ace to post an Instagram pic at a Richmond game during the 2020 season.
