St Mary’s penalties explained following the breach of the NTFL’s fly-in fly-out rules

ST Mary’s have been handed a hefty list of penalties for a breach of the fly-in fly-out rules, which includes a back dated penalty for the controversial Division 2 walk off.

The charges which include a hefty fine, a coach suspension and an upcoming points deduction relate to the Premier League qualifying final on February 27 against Wanderers.

In that match St Mary’s were found to be in breach of the NTFL fly-in by-law having played two more than the allowed three fly-in players.

-$10,000 fine for the breach of the fly-in player rule where the club fielded two more than the allowed three fly-in players against Wanderers on February 27.

-$1500 additional fine as carry-over charges for the Division 2 walk off against Waratah on November 14.

-Four week suspension of Premier League coach Anthony Vallejo, two weeks for breach of the fly-in player rule and an additional two weeks for a charge post the 2019-20 grand final. Vallejo will not be able to coach until round three of the 2021-22 season and will miss both the 2020-21 preliminary final and a potential grand final.

-Premier League team deducted four points at the start of the 2021-22 season for the breach of the fly-in player rule.

St Mary’s president Adrian Moscheni accepted that the club made a mistake with regard to their understanding of those players eligible to play relative to their residency status in the NT.

“Circumstances had changed for particular players and we didn’t review our fly-in list relative to these changes,” Moscheni said.

“We accept the penalties as fair and reasonable in relation to our breach for this game and are happy that we can now move on and focus on the weekend’s game.”
