THE three Wanderers girls involved in a TIO Stadium carpark brawl have avoided being charged by police.

The girls – who were the subject of a police investigation – were given a youth diversion order. Strike Force Trident Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said the girls were dealt with by the Youth Justice Act.

“NT Police investigated the incident and as a result, three youths were subject to the provisions of the Youth Justice Act 2005. The matter has now been finalised,” he said.

Three junior Wanderers players and a parent have been banned from AFL NT venue events for up to five years

At about 12.30pm emergency services were called after a fight in the stadium carpark following the under-18s girl’s game between St Mary’s and Wanderers on February 20.

A 17-year-old was treated for “minor injuries” by St John at the scene. The NT News understands the St Mary’s player was later taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with a chipped vertebrae.

Head of AFLNT Stuart Totham (pictured) was disappointed in the incident calling the heavy sanctions an important line-in-the-sand moment for the organisation and clubs.

“We’ve had a number of incidents this year, particularly off the field, that we are not happy with,” he said.

“We have a lot of work that we need to do with the clubs in terms of getting a consistent approach in how we deal with these incidents in line with community standards. We do not want this behaviour at the football so if you want to carry on with that behaviour, we’d prefer you did something else with your spare time.”
