WORK on a new game-changing $12 million international-standard multi-purpose grandstand will start within weeks of the end of this year’s Darwin Cup Carnival.
The three-level stand with private corporate boxes will be built where the Ted D’Ambrosio bar is located and will have a walkway connecting it to the Ted Bailey Grandstand.
Construction will start in September with completion in time for next year’s Great Northern Darwin Cup Carnival.
It will be funded by a Northern Territory Government grant and is expected to support 70 to 100 jobs during construction.
Darwin Turf Club chairman Brett Dixon told the NT News the new facility would allow the club to strategically market the already successful Darwin Cup Carnival into Asia and the southern states, which has not been possible in the past.

“This also allows us to partner with Tourism NT and local operators to lure more Asian and southern tourists to experience not just racing ... but the many attractions and events that only Darwin has to offer,” Mr Dixon said.
“The stand will have three levels that will provide uninterrupted views of the entire racecourse and enable the Darwin Turf Club to provide a world-class experience in airconditioned comfort.

“The top level will have modular walls that will give us the ability to be transformed into six private boxes that will assist with securing the many corporate clients that attend and have high-end race day expectations. It will give us the ability to provide a high-end style of race day experience throughout the Great Northern Darwin Cup Carnival.”
Mr Dixon said the new facility would provide first class dining experiences throughout the Carnival and the many feature race day meetings.
