Jason Lyon rapt to win Darwin Guineas aboard Trident at Darwin Cup Carnival opener

Star Victorian jockey Jason Lyon was rapt to take out the $70,000 Ladbrokes Darwin Guineas (1600m) aboard Trident, securing himself the feature win, on the opening day of the 2021 Darwin Cup Carnival today.

STAR Victorian jockey Jason Lyon was rapt to take out the $70,000 Ladbrokes Darwin Guineas (1600m) aboard Trident, securing himself the feature win, on the opening day of the 2021 Darwin Cup Carnival today.

Trident, the Mark Nyhan trained three-year-old, found itself at the back of the pack for the majority of the race.

But with a kick from hoop, Lyon surged, coming out of the bend, going wide and leaving the former leading pack behind.

Neil Dyer’s Teng Hui Feng Li looked to challenge late on, but finished a length behind, beating out early favourite Casino Seventeen from the Garry Lefoe stable.

Heather Lehmann’s Sanblas, ridden by Sonja Wiseman, was the best of the rest, beating out Paula Trenwith’s Spy Colonel for fourth.

Gary Clarke’s quartet of Siakam, Obligatory, Slellig Island and Justwins were among the remainder.

“I’m just rapt. He’s a good little horse and we thought he would be hard to beat,” Lyon said.

“It’s good for the trainer, Mark Nyhan, he’s just a battler and to win a race like this is just a really good for him.

“There was plenty of good speed in there. He’s a good horse and he will go on to run the Derby I would say.

“For me I just want to try and win as many feature races as I can.”
