AFTER a one-year hiatus, Netball Northern Territory welcomed teams from across the Territory to compete in an action-packed 2021 Indigenous Netball Carnival over the weekend.

The carnival is regarded as one of the most important events on the Netball NT calendar. It was established to increase participation of the Indigenous community in sport and promote a healthy lifestyle in a fun and competitive way.

Twelve teams competed across three divisions, showcasing the wide range of talent and skill in the Top End.

The newly formed Banks Bulldogs Storm ran out the winners in the under-15s, beating the Mash Deadly Sisters 28-6 in the final.

However, Molly Suradi, from the losing finalists, took home the rising star award.

Us Mob showed their dominance in the mixed division, beating the Gammon All Stars 26-11. The All Stars’ Tabitha May won the MVP.

And Us Mob also won the Open category, beating Rockers in a thrilling 20-19 grand final. The Storm’s Johanna Gregory won the MVP.

The Rockers from Katherine were one of two travelling teams that attended the tournament, showing the vast range of talent in the Territory.

Netball NT marketing specialist Dustie Tare was pleased to see the competition back on its feet and plenty of teams showing their support.

“It was great to see the carnival return this year,” Tare said. “It was also great to see that the conditions surrounding the pandemic didn’t hinder our team nominations, which were still on par with previous years.

“Rockers were new to the carnival’s Open Division and are an example of the talent of netball players within the Indigenous community in the Territory.”
